Preparing for Assignment 1: The Season
For this assignment I am required to photograph subjects which capture the feel of the current season, which, in this case, is Winter.
To this end I started making a list of words which describe and embody Winter for me, in relation to the landscape.
Firstly came thoughts of bad weather, namely:-
Cold, dark, short days, low light, frost, snow, rain, wind, and second came thoughts of the other sorts of weather that is possible in winter - crisp, alpine, bright and I resolved to look for images that would portray both 'bad' and 'good' weather elements.
There are other visual signals which inform us about the season. These include the amount and colour of leaf on trees, the presence of flowers, the condition of hedges and grass and the state of farmed land, particularly in arable areas. Animals and insects can give further visual clues. Winter is clearly depicted by bare trees, which have a special beauty in their skeletal structure. Long grass is often bleached and flattened and short grass can be yellowed following prolonged cold periods. Animals may have thickened coats or have a hunched attitude against the cold. Birds may be puffed up when cold in winter, or in fine plumage in Spring.
With this list in mind I set out to take photographs which portrayed the essence of winter to me. I also had to bear in mind the recommendation to consider the light (angle of the sun), and, colour (soft or contrasting), detail and the broader landscape.
I also wanted to bear in mind the design elements that I have been working on in this section.
Because this Assignment also forms part of the final portfolio it was important to choose some locations which are easily revisited.
