The Horizon Line
Horizons in Britain are largely horizontal except in mountainous areas such as Snowdonia, The Lake District, and the mountains of Scotland. How it is positioned in the frame makes a difference to the impact of a photo. In camera we can choose either horizontal or vertical framing. Later an image may be cropped to a different width/height ratio or made into a square.
Ways in which it can be altered within the frame : it can be high giving a small amount of sky, in the middle often giving a rather static composition or low e.g. to emphasise and interesting sky.
A wide angle view gives a strong horizontal effect. If you move in closer to a tree or structure in the frame, either by zooming in or moving physically closer, you can introduce an element which breaks the horizon or takes viewing precedence over the horizontal line.
