Feedback from Assignment 2
My tutor says, whilst acknowledging some useful references to other photographers and the course material, he finds the work seems unresolved both as an idea of journey and as a set of images. He considered that the problem lay with my edit. I fully accept this view and indeed I felt the journey I was presenting translated more as a collection of holiday snaps rather than a cohesive idea.
I think where I have gone wrong is that I have interpreted the word 'journey' too literally in spite of having read and thought about other different ways of interpreting this word as a concept. With a camera in my hand, I failed to relate back to those thoughts and seemed only able to think in the here and now, mainly in a chronological and progression way.
Another criticism I have received is the lack of expansion on statements I made - thus too much left in my head and not enough presented for consideration by another.
My tutor felt that I had a preconceived idea of which photographs would be 'good' to present and had not concentrated sufficiently on sorting images (even less good shots) into what works well together as a set. I did take in excess of 1000 images over the course of my visit to the Puffins and I believe I wanted to show a little bit of everything, and also, at the time of compiling I felt the journey as a there and back was too strung out, too varied, and too 'something and nothing'
My next move is to rtry to sort out a more cohesive set which will still convey something of my first idea.
Failing that, I have two further possible 'journeys' which I have been photographing since my submission.
